Caur of the Ejinn

A somewhat shy bowwoman, constantly vying for jobs for her mercenaries. She lacks the ability to perform magicks other than the most basic of healing, something she is typically quite cagey about. Though she can use Aetherytes for travel, for distances larger than a few malms she must use traditional means of travel. Despite this, she makes damned good use of a bow, able to accurately pierce bullseyes at distances up to 150 to 200 yalms.

An expert in the history and practice of archery, there's not a single conventional - or unconventional - type of arrowhead she does not employ, or at least know how to employ in her archery.

The Ejinn

To say that the Ejinn love to swim is a misunderstanding of their nature. Their love for the water is rivalled perhaps only by that of the fish they hunt for food, or the riverweed they use to create baskets. They do not swim because they love it – though they do – the Ejinn swim because their nature demands it. Some Highlander Hyur have – rather crudely – described the way the Ejinn swim as “making love to the damned river.” Though this description is unceremonious, it does attempt to describe the grace with which the Ejinn Xaela travel through the river.

In casual company Caur wears a bandana to cover her unsightly missing eye. It is more comfortable and she usually feels no compulsion to dress it up. She wears a lovely dark blue, visible in nearly all of her clothing. Her horns are adorned with silver and lapis, and her lips are tinted a dark gray.
In polite company, Caur is inclined to wear a glass eye, even if it does cause her some pain and discomfort. She isn't terribly happy with her current glass eye, though, as it does not have a luminous limbal ring like her right eye does. She would love to commission a higher quality one, but is unable to find an artisan who makes such commodities.
Caur is more inclined to conversation these days, though sometimes she falls into a bad habit of brooding in a bar by her lonesome. One might think her to be shy and chaste and moral, but she is - at least as far as food and alcohol are concerned - rather hedonistic. Only recently has she donned the clothes of the Azim Steppe again.

Philosophy of Battle

Manipulation and Composure is the Name of the Game!
❛❛A bowman's perceptive faculties are merely the foundations of a decent shot. To take the perfect shot one manipulates the enemy into position and looses one's arrow. You will strike true if your enemy is out of step or out of line. The key is to trick them into falling out of line. Make them believe it was their idea and then strike.❜❜ - Caur on the importance of manipulating one's suroundings
❛❛To loose the arrow is to kill or maim. Where magicks are sourced from force of will and Aether, arrows are loosed from physical force and matter. Pray take care that your arrow finds its mark in the throat of your enemy and not that of your friend. To this end, compose yourself. If you allow the heat of battle to shatter your composure you will surely harm a friend.❜❜ - Caur on the importance of composure       ❛❛The best bowman I ever met was an old Xaela woman who couldn't make a cup of tea without spilling half the damned thing all over herself. When she spilled scalding hot tea on herself, did she scream? No. She remained calm, separated the fabric of her skirt from her legs, mopped up what little mess there was, and refilled her cup. One's dexterity is secondary - tertiary, even, to success as an archer. Why do you think I taught you meditation before I taught you to string your bow?❜❜ - Caur after tripping over her left foot

History

 The Basics
Caur was born the youngest of three children. She constantly competed in martial prowess with her two brothers, both of whom were swordsmen. Despite this, her preferred method of combat was a discipline she called "fire magery," which "does exactly what it says on the tin." She unfortunately lost the ability to manipulate Aether when she was caught in the throat with a Dotharl battleaxe as she cast a spell. Luckily for her, the spell erupted from her throat, cauterizing the wound and killing her assailant. She speaks with a slight rasp to her voice as a result of this.
She left the Steppe over ten years ago very shortly after losing her left eye. She left, it turns out, because she was exiled from The Ejinn because she was careless and led a raiding party of Chaghan to the location of her pod, resulting in the death of three Ejinn, including her lover, Alun.
She founded a mercenary company called the Levinbolts after a major windfall from an Ishgardian noble she assisted a little over two years ago.

Flaws and Merits

Caur's Flaws

  • Cynical - If someone approaches her at random, and they are perceived overly flirtatious or friendly, she is liable to throw up walls.

  • Barbed Tongue - Caur is incredibly prone to throwing insults at people she dislikes. It is not uncommon for her to insult someone's intelligence.

  • Easily offended - Caur, despite being able to dish out mean comments, is particularly prone to become distraught if someone insults her heritage.

  • Prejudice against certain Xaela Tribes - (THIS STAYS OUT OF SAY CHAT BECAUSE RACIALLY CHARGED THINGS NEED TO STAY OUT OF SAY CHAT) Caur has a slight fear of the Dotharl and Chaghan tribes.

Caur's Merits

  • Generous - She's not rich, but she does keep a pretty significant amount of cash to give to those in need.

  • She knows skill when she sees it - as the head of a Mercenary Company, Caur can see a skilled skirmisher by observing a fight, or even by hearing an explanation of one's fighting style.

  • Understanding - If Caur approaches someone before they approach her, she's inclined to trust them and believe them when they speak.

  • Curious - Caur is possessed of a curiosity rivaled by only that of Coeurls. Her inquisitive nature often sees her asking strangers about interesting weapons or features, especially for the purpose of writing her thesis on various types of weaponry.

Caur's Connections

♥ = Romantic Relationship           ♦ = Working Relationship
♣ = Friends                         ♠ = Animosity

  VAVARA VARA   . carrd

♦ ♣

"I saw her, drunk at the bar, waving around her staff like a fool. But then I got to know her and realized she is certainly no fool. She is perhaps wiser than any person I've ever known."

Vavara Vara ended up joining Caur in one of her escorting gigs that night, and has been a steady companion ever since. The two know things about the other that no one else seems to know, in spite of the fact they've known one another only a few short years.

  Mesa Kha   . carrd

♦ ♣

Of the Xaela Caur has met in Eorzea, none make her feel quite like she's been disinherited from her culture quite like Mesa does. Though she know she doesn't mean to, Caur sees Mesa as a perfect blend of Eorzean and Steppe culture - a balance she has been failing to strike since she arrived in Aldenard.

Regardless, Caur is inclined to see Mesa as a friend and ally.

  Juniper Roseheart   . carrd

 ♥ ♦

"Outgoing - perhaps to a fault - but incredibly kind! His manners are of the highest caliber, in spite of the fact that his flirtatiousness strains conventional social graces. Though he is obviously wealthy, he isn't ostentatious about it. With regards to his personal appearance, however... He possesses an extraordinary personal beauty that one must see to believe - And I think he knows it."    Juniper spoke to Caur while she was leaning on a banister in Quicksands, brooding. The two have been getting along incredibly well since, in spite of Caur's initial standoffishness. Though she hasn't felt for anyone in an age, some kind of romance appears to be blossoming between the two of them.Though the two are no longer in contact, Caur remembers Juniper fondly.

Plot Hooks

Ejinn Characters

An Ejinn might be aware of a Xaela by the name of Caur who voluntarily exiled herself after making a decision which led to some of her tribemates being killed.
One may also have heard a rumor that this exile is not self-imposed.

Xaela Characters

Caur is sheepish around other Xaela (for reasons listed above), but as she misses the Steppe, she longs for their company. There is a chance she will come try to speak with you if you are a Xaela.

Characters with Aethersight

Those with a proficiency for sensing another's Aether will see an Aetheric disturbance in Caur's throat, regardless of whether it is covered by cloth or jewelry. The origin of this disturbance is clearly physical trauma mixed with psychological trauma, and the affected area is clearly and heavily aspected with fire Aether.

Romance

OOC, I am interested in a romantic interest for Caur. If you are interested, /tell at me, and we can have an OOC conversation about it.

Characters with The Echo

Those with the Echo, no matter how it manifests, may be able to experience the battle in which Caur lost her eye and watched her lover die. Be warned that bringing this up to her will cause her to be extremely distrustful and hostile.

Goldsmith Characters

Caur has been asking around Ul'Dah and Ishgard, looking for goldsmiths and silversmiths willing to make an attempt to make a glass eye for her. She wants it to better match her spoken eye, and she is willing to do any number of favors, and pay a large quantity of gil for such a commodity. You may recognize her as the Xaela woman who has been asking around the Goldsmith's Guild about a glass eye, or you may have heard a rumor of such a woman.

What's with Caur's Mug?

Caur carries a blue leather mug hanging by a small clasp on her belt. Caur appears to drink exclusively from this cup, unless she has two different drinks in front of her, which is a rarity. She appears to instinctively reach for this mug when she is stressed out or nervous. Those from the Steppe will immediately recognize it to be made of Gulo-Gulo leather, and see that it is embossed with various Steppe animals.

My Rules

Everybody has boundaries in roleplay and in real life! These are mine, and they are really important!

rule 001.   : Be Aware of Bleed
Caur is, generally, not a bad actor. However, as with all good characters, she is flawed. Most likely, if Caur does something morally questionable it is because I intentionally wrote her that way, and not because I feel or operate the way she does. Caur's feelings are -of course - not my own. Check your bleed! You should absolutely read more about bleed here!
Be aware that bleed is not necessarily bad, it is just something that happens in roleplay that can become dangerous for you and your roleplay partner if left unchecked, or if you are unaware of it. You should check in on it with your roleplay partner!
rule 002.   : I do not Interact with People Under 21
This is a hard and fast rule for me. I feel no need to elaborate.
rule 003.   : Caur is my Character to Control
I ask that in roleplay interactions you not control Caur's actions. She has been written with as much care as I have put into any of my other characters, and you can't possibly know her like I do.
rule 004.   : Don't be weirdly fetishy about trans people
Just don't do it. I'm trans. I'm not your weird fetish. Do it around me and you risk getting muted or blocked.

rule 005.   : Scenes Should Have a Purpose
This isn't to say scenes must be narratively earth shattering. Even small domestic scenes in which two characters enjoy a cup of tea can have purpose.
rule 006.   : Be Kind. Please.
I ask that you be kind in your interactions with me. I do not go out of my way to log into FFXIV just for people to be rude to me. I will, of course, be kind in turn!
rule 007.   : With Regards to Sexuality
1. I am not opposed to ERP, but it is not a priority for me, and it is not something I will go out of my way to engage with.
2. I will not engage with stories involving sexual assault. Period.
  rule 008.   : Discord Privileges!
If you're really nice and I like you I'll grace you with my discord username! You won't get it if you're mean, though! >.<
Also don't give it to other people, that's an instant block.
  rule 009.   : Favors!
I have a rule for Caur - only deal in favors. Why do I deal in favors as opposed to gil? Well, it drives plot! If Caur owes you a favor for a service she has requested from you, it gives us an incentive to bring our characters back together to do more plot!

OOC

I'm Selena! I'm a 29 year old trans girl, and I love playing games and doing roleplay! I'm a goth, married to my wife of two years, and have been on hormones for over 8 years.
I've been roleplaying in one fashion or another for over a decade. Between TTRPGs and LARPing, I've got about twelve years of experience playing and three years organizing. Text based roleplay is new for me, however, and I'm excited to dip my toes into it!
I've been a World of Darkness roleplayer for about eight years, and you can see its influence in my storytelling and my writing. My hope is, in the next year or so, to begin hosting a LARP in the city I live in!    Caur's moon codes are available on request - but you're not missing much without them!
